Re: Russell County Says Thank You.

It speaks a lot about the conditions at Castlewood. Do you see any kids from Lebanon going to Abingdon or kids from Honaker going to Richlands? Nope. I really hate to use this as an example because I hate SOL tests, but: Russell Co has had either the 2nd or 3rd highest test scores in SWVA the past few years, but Castlewood hasn't even been fully accredited until this year. Now I'm not saying that to say Russell Co has a better educational system than the rest of the area just because of our test scores, I'm just using it to compare the three highs schools in Russell County to each other. Honaker and Lebanon have been fully accredited for years and C-Wood only until this year. For some reason or another, Castlewood has always lagged behind the rest of the county. There are a lot of Castlewood kids who also go to Lebanon.

So your point is what? Russell can't run 3 schools? And shrek your figures don't match , you a Russell student? Do you and your father ride to high school together? An education is supposed to be free, Wise pays 1778 per student, Russell pays 1383 in their schools. Wise gets 3921 state and 1290 federal for each student. But no one really thinks you are from Russell County, you are just trying to stir the pot- keep it up and you will get some on you.

My point was about what LPDFTBL said. The situation at Castlewood doesn't relfect entirely on the rest of Russell County. We can operate 3 schools just fine as far as I can tell. If kids at Castlewood wanna go to St Paul and Lebanon instead of their own school thats fine, I don't really care. I am just trying to point out that Castlewood is maybe just in a little different situation than Russell Co. And I've also heard that theres a lot kids in our county that live around the Scott Co border that go to Twin Springs. Anyone know if thats true?

I know what you meant hhstiger. I think we both meant the same thing. This is just someone wanting to stir the out of county student crap. To me if the kids in the Castlewood area want to attend St. Paul so be it. The state pays for their education. There is many school systems that has students from other counties. So should all be turned away.
If you get into that. Then each town who has kids going to school in another town needs to stop that? No one wants to get into that. Just as long as they can stir something.
I can get on here and say well i know kids who attend Appy who live in Bigstone and vice versa. But what good is that?
If the parents and the kids feel they are getting a better education attending St. Paul rather than Castlewood than that is between them.
All this is, basically someone trying to stir the pot about the out of county population in Wise County schools. So i guess we need to kick them all out to make a handful of people happy? No i don't think so.

No I do not think that students at Saint Paul are getting a better education than students at Castlewood. The administration at Saint Paul works very hard to "recruit top students from Russell county leaving Castlewood with average and less than avereage students in their school. Is this fair to the tax payers of Wise County that this much effort is spent on students that live outside of Wise county? I agree that if a student wants to attend a school in another county that is fine. Saint Paul only allows the strongest students or those that might help their weak sports teams. I can promise you that any school in Wise County will accept any student but Saint Paul makes sure that their out of county students have at least a 3.0 gpa to be accepted.

I don't know anything about anything as far as recuriting students and GPA's.
But if it concerns you that much. Maybe you should talk to the Russell County school board.
If anything like Wise County. They probably have a special position set up to do investigations.
But seriously if it is that big of concern talk to the Russell County school board.

Give up Basham, consolidation is kinda out of the question till someone comes up with a decent plan , and "d bet some will run on the "I'll never support consolidation platform!" to try and keep the school board jobs.

Just curious, what kind of plan would most people in Wise County like to see? I guess the send St Paul to Coeburn, send Pound to Wise and send Appy to PV wasn't very popular. If consolidation was definitely going to happen would people rather see 3 new schools or 2 new schools and would Norton ever close down Burton and send its kids to Wise Co?

I think had there been a plan laid out for 3 new highschools, this would not of become an issue.
Problem was and still is those at the top made their decisions based on their study.
Put together a totally unfeasible plan, and one highly uneconomical and left out one big thing. The children and the citizens who would have to pay the bills.
Even the study no one can say who is to pay for it. Because the SB never signed off on it? And it was not as complete as it should of been. And it was not to be a study on consolidation either, but that was all it basically stated?
I myself knew it would.
But the people doing the study, when ask, well the answer was like an auto response, we do not do consolidation work? Yet that was their plan?
Why even put out a bid, and esp. accept a bid from a company that cannot do consolidation, esp. when you already had 2 other studies pointing to consolidation.
Most took what was done as an insult to the citizens and the children themselves.
Most figured this was a study to get schools repaired. Then there is this ridiculous close schools and consolidate in 3 months? And bring in 500,000 dollars in trailers, and begin a $54 million dollar renovation of 3 old buildings that would take how long? And how to do the construction? At night and on weekends and summer?
Most figured at the most it would point to 3 new schools. But the plan adopted and put out, was just pure ridiculous. I don't care who that makes mad. But it was.
As far as Burton. It would be a real nightmare for them to close the school. Im not sure how all their funding is. But being a City school. It would probably be an economical nightmare for the City. If and when consolidation does happen. Only thing i look for is Burton will probably have to move to the Cumberland district.
Only way i could see Norton City giving up Burton would be if it would be more economical. I'd like to see some of their thoughts on it. Since we here in Appy have been labeled as trouble makers for not accepting a bad idea and plan. What if Burton was to be faced with being closed and pushed into something similiar to the above? I bet that would go over about like what the County tried to do.
But you do bring out something. Burton's age. Been awhile since i've been through the whole school, but it has some age on it.
I wonder if the Norton City School Board or the City itself, has money put back to do major upkeep. I'd like to know that. And if they have a depreciation fund. Why did the county not have one?
I will say this. And i know it will make some mad. But after the first consolidation study was done.
The county basically quit doing upkeep on several schools, major items, like plumbing and cooling and roof repairs etc. Nothing like they should have. And that is a fact not just rumor.
Not really ask about the condition of Burton but it raises some questions. What kind of major upkeep will it need in the future and does the city have a depreciation fund, to fund such needs.
